Talented Trotting Sires Add Depth to National Yearling Sale

The best trotting genetics from across the harness racing globe will greet buyers at the 2024 National Yearling Sale in Auckland and Christchurch, with NZB Standardbred offering another quality catalogue filled with the progeny of squaregaiting stars from both hemispheres.

16 trotting yearlings will be offered at the Karaka Sale Centre on Sunday 18 February, with a further 50 set to head through the ring at Canterbury Agricultural Park on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 February.

In the last two racing seasons, Majestic Son has dominated New Zealand’s biggest open class trotting events with the deeds of his outstanding sons Sundees Son (NZ) and Oscar Bonavena (NZ).

Buyers will have the opportunity to select from seven Majestic Son yearlings at Christchurch this year.

  • Lot 179, a colt from the daughter of the outstanding producer and Group One winner Kylee Ree (NZ) (Monarchy).
  • Lot 252 is a filly from the multiple stakes performer Paramount Queen (NZ) (Love You).
  • Lot 386 is from a multiple stakes-winner Chevron Express (NZ) (Muscle Mass).

Father Patrick comes into the National Yearling Sale following an utterly dominant season with his two-year-olds in New Zealand in 2023.

This year, Father Patrick’s standout results have been headed by the unbeaten star and Harness Million winner Paramount Kiwi (NZ).

One Father Patrick yearling will be offered at Karaka with a strong offering of eight to go through the Christchurch sales ring.

  • Lot 184 is a colt from the stakes-race performing mare Hot Pants (NZ) (Majestic Son).
  • Lot 256, half-sister to the stakes race performer Ronald J (NZ) (Love You).
  • Lot 336 is a filly from a half-sister to Interdominion Trotting Championship Winner Galleons Sunset (NZ) (Sundon).

What The Hill is making a big impact on harness racing across the world already. His debut crop of two-year-olds impressed in North America, headlined by sons Dreambigaimhigh (NZ), Lovemeto, and rising performers like Luby Lill, Kiss N Run, Bet N Win, and many more.

There are nine What the Hill’s offered at Karaka and twelve offered at Christchurch.

  • Lot 53 is a colt from the winning mare and Group One-producing mare Luby Ann (Andover Hall), making it a half-brother Tickle Me Pink (Muscle Hill) and Luby Lou (Muscle Hill).
  • Lot 66 is a filly from Group One placegetter Regal Love (Love You) who in turn is a half-sister to Twentyten (Muscles Yankee), High Gait (Muscles Yankee), and High Energy (Father Patrick).
  • Lot 69 is bred on similar bloodlines to Lot 66. A colt from Regal Volo (Malabar Man) who is the grandam of Regal Love (Love You).
  • Lot 138 is a first foal from the Group-winning mare Destiny Jones (The Pres).
  • Lot 330 is a colt from Group One-producing mare Una Bromac (Live or Die).

Creatine has made an immediate impact during the short time he has been available to Australasian breeders. Southern Diamond (NZ), Hot to Trot (NZ), and Walkinonsunshine (NZ) are all fine examples of this.

Three Creatine yearlings will be offered at Karaka with a further four to go through the Christchurch sales ring.

  • Lot 10, a filly from the strong producer and race-winning mare Dutch Annie (NZ) (Continentalman).
  • Lot 102 is a colt from the 17-race winning mare and successful dam Yagunnakissmeornot (NZ) (Love You).
  • Lot 208 is a colt from the family of champion mares One Over Kenny (NZ) (Sundon) and Queen Elida (NZ) (Love You).

With a very limited amount of progeny being offered from the hot trotting sire at this year's sale, buyers will be all eyes on the two being presented at Karaka.

  • Lot 49 is a filly from the Group One producing mare Love Ya Doosie (Love You). Dam of Kyvalley Chief (Muscle Hill), Kyvalley Hotspur (Muscle Hill) and Group One Northern Derby, and 3YO Harness Million Trot winner Lovemeto (What the Hill).
  • Lot 51 is also a filly out of the well-bred mare Lovemelikeyoudo (Love You) who is sister to Regal Love, and half-sister to Twentyten (Muscles Yankee), High Gait (Muscles Yankee), High Energy (Father Patrick) and Regal Attire (Muscle Hill).

All horses purchased at the Sale are eligible for the NZB Standardbred Harness Million Series, with approximately $1 million in prizemoney on offer for graduates of the Yearling Sales.
