Richly Deserved Listed Victory for Watching Our Coin (NZ)

The back mark of 30m wasn’t enough to stop Watching Our Coin (NZ) (He’s Watching) from powering to a deserved victory in the A$35,000 Listed Northam Pacing Cup (2560m) at Northam.

The NZB Standardbred graduate swept home from off the pace to take the staying feature for trainer Michael Young and driver Gary Hall Jnr.

Watching Our Coin was secured for just $9000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale at Christchurch when he was offered by breeder-vendor Brent Smith.

A consistent performer in New Zealand when trained by the late Murray Edmonds, the pacer headed to West Australia and has racked up plenty of wins since joining the Young stable.

Watching Our Coin (NZ)  made it win number 10 across the Tasman courtesy of a patient drive from Hall Jnr.

From their back mark, the pair settled well off the speed and remained back in the field for much of the Northam Cup.

Hall Jnr made his move before the home turn and Watching Our Coin loomed up to the leaders before going on to score a thoroughly deserved Listed victory.

Successful breeder Brent Smith will be back at the National Yearling Sale at Christchurch this year with one quality trotting lot.

The Southland breeder-vendor will offer Lot 194, a colt by the exciting French sire Bold Eagle (FR).

The colt is a half-brother to the outstanding trotter and multiple Group race placegetter Cracker Hill (NZ) (Muscle Hill).

Laura Smith is preparing an outstanding lineup of 20 blueblood youngsters who will be offered at the 2024 National Yearling Sale at Christchurch on February 20 and 21.
