24 January 2019

Every year we sit back in awe of the wonderful fillies that this country produces and what an impressive list it is in just the last decade.

Breckon Farms inside the Karaka sale ring.

Adore Me, Arden’s Darlin, Beaudiene Bad Babe, Bettor Cover Lover, Bettor Joy, Bonnie Joan, Carabella, Cheer The Lady, Dancing Diamonds, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Dream About Me, Elle Mac, Fight For Glory, Joanne’s A Delight, Katy Perry, Lancome, Lauraella, Linda Lovegrace, Lizzie Maquire, Luisanabelle Midfrew, O Baby, One Dream, Onlyforyou, Princess Tiffany, Spanish Armada, The Orange Agent and Venus Serena are just some of them.

Pacing fillies make up one third of the lots catalogued at the 2019 National Yearling Sale. We have already highlighted the quality trotters so let’s have a look at the pacing fillies.

Clare McGowan prepares Lot 2, the granddaughter of Broodmare of Excellence Award winner Interchange. Lot 3, on account of Woodlands Stud, is a half-sister to six in black print, including Lizzie Maquire who is out of Unrehearsed. Lots 4 and 9 are both fillies from tremendous trotting families, while Breckon Farms offer Lots 6 and 12, both related to Elle Mac – the winner of no less than five Group One races. Lot 10, the property of Kahukuri Bloodstock, is a half-sister to $100,000 earners El Jacko and VC Manoeuvre.

Pukekohe training duo of Logan Hollis and Shane Robertson present their strongest draft in many years and includes some outstanding fillies. Lot 22 is a half-sister to Cyclone Prince and Cyclone Kate, Lot 76 is out of Dancing Diamonds making her a half-sister to Princess Tiffany and Rock Diamond, while Lot 88 is by Bettor’s Delight from the 11-time winning mare and New Zealand record holder River Polka.

Alabar Stud is offering Lot 66 through the Hollis and Robertson Equine Services banner, a Rock N Roll Heaven half-sister to outstanding filly Maczaffair. Maczaffair is the winner of 18 races and $384,442 in career earnings, including the Group One WA Oaks.

Taffy Ltd will offer yearlings at the Auckland Sale for the first time with two Group One related fillies offered under the Wairau Farm banner. Lot 57 is from the Group One NZ Oaks runner-up Safedra while Lot 78 is from the Group One Oaks winner on both sides of the Tasman De Lovely.

Dancingonmoonlight brings the majority of their draft north to be offered at Karaka. They will offer a strong line up of fillies, including Lot 81 who is out of a half-sister to Carabella and Lot 138 who is a half-sister to the recent export Run Boy Run.

Woodland’s Stud will offer 13 fillies in total – seven by Bettor’s Delight, including Lot 37 on behalf of Charlie Roberts who is a three-quarter sister to Adore Me and Lot 46 who is a sister to My Casino Belle. The farm’s last yearling at the Auckland Sale will be Lot 144 who is a sister to six black print performers – four of them with who have earnings in six figures.

There is also an incredible run of fillies starting around Lot 74 from the Cooney stable, a half-sister to Five Star Anvil and Lets Elope. Breckon Farms join this run of fillies with Lot 85, out of Rozelski, Lot 91, the granddaughter of Hot Shoe Shuffle, and Lot 96, out of Simply Stunning (1.56.5).

The Christchurch Sale offers 10 fillies from either Group One-winning or producing mares.

Two of them have been produced by David and Adrienne Shadbolt who operate as Broadfield Lodge. Lot 284 is by Art Major from the Breeders’ Crown winner Katy Perry and Lot 386 is by Bettor’s Delight from the impressive 22-time winning mare Beaudiene Bad Babe.

David and Dawn Kennedy will offer a filly from the same family at Lot 348, a half-sister to Bad Babe and Beaudiene Boaz under the Beaudiene Breeding banner. They are also preparing Lot 211 for the Allen Family Trust with the filly a sister to King Solomon and the family of Cheer The Lady and Spanish Armada.

The 50-strong southern bred and reared contingent that the Kennedy’s are a part of also includes Arden Lodges Lot 299, a filly from the five-time Group One placed Rocknroll Arden. Shard Farms Lot 232 is bred on the Bettor’s Delight/Cullen cross and is out of a half-sister to Sly Flyin – the winner of 28 races, including the Group One City NZ ffa. Stephen and Carol Baucke will present a Bettor’s Delight filly at Lot 388. She is out of Citylight who paced as a three-year-old 1.56.5, and is the dam of a 1.52.9 three-year-old in Australia.

Penny Boyle presents two Group One related fillies with Lot 207, a half-sister to Majorly Foxy Styx, winner of the WA Mares Classic, and Lot 268, an Art Major filly out of Australian 3YO Pacing Filly of the Year Millwood Meg.

Both of the fillies that Neil Radford’s Kufra Farm have catalogued are Group One related and both from the family of Christian Cullen. Lot 247 is a half-sister to More The Better who won both the Harness Jewels and Sires Stakes 2YO Final, and has now paced 1.49 in America. Lot 395 is a half-sister to Heez Orl Black, the winner of 32 races to date. From the same family, but prepared by Fiona Mules, is Lot 229 – an Art Major filly out of Kate’s Rocket who is the dam of two to run 1.51.7 in Australia.

Rounding out the Group One fillies are Lots 273 and 295. Laura Smith will present a half-sister to five black print performers, including Group One NZ ffa winner Pembrook Benny, at Lot 273 while Rosedale Farm will offer a filly out of Group One Caduceus Fillies Classic winner Rona Lorraine at Lot 295 – also bred on the Bettor’s Delight/Cullen cross.

The Spicers open the Pacing session on Wednesday with a He’s Watching filly (Lot 196) whose pedigree page is brimming with black print. This is followed by Lot 205, a Bettor’s Delight filly from the family of Cowgirls N Indians and Party Party.

Carrying on their past tradition, Norwegian Wood has named Lot 212 after another Beatles hit ‘Get Back.’ This filly is from the 11 win mare Glenferrie EJ and is from the family of Group One Harness Jewel’s 2YO Diamond winner Dizzy Miss Lizzy. The farm will also offer Lot 375 from the same family who is out of Blackbird Fly.

Lot 341 will be presented by Ripple Creek and is closely related to the horse of the moment in Tiger Tara. Ripple Creek have also consigned a filly (Lot 389) descending from the sensational Scuse Me. Studholme Bloodstock have a filly from the same super family in Lot 352 by Bettor’s Delight.

Jamie and Natalie Gameson’s Dunvegan Lodge have consigned a filly at Lot 315 while John McKenzie’s Kelvin Home Holdings have consigned a filly at Lot 317 – both fillies are impressively a full or half-sister to no less than seven in black print.

While the breeding numbers have continually reduced over the years, the quality of the mares that make up the broodmare band has been phenomenal. If you have ever had the inkling to expand or lift the quality of your breeding interest, then New Zealand Bloodstock’s entry into the Standardbred arena is your golden opportunity.
