Hot And Treacherous (NZ) Announces Open Class Arrival

21 December 2021

Hot And Treacherous (NZ) as a yearling in 2019.

NZB Standardbred graduate Hot And Treacherous (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) cemented his status as a rising Open Class star with his powerful front-running win in the $26,500 Group Three Thames Goldfields Summer Cup (2200m) at Alexandra Park on Friday 17 December.

The Brian and Gareth Hughes trained gelding used his brilliant speed to notch his first black type success in the event for driver Maurice McKendry.

Hot And Treacherous was a $60,000 purchase by Brian Hughes from the Breckon Farms draft at the 2019 National Standardbred Yearling Sale in Auckland.

Since his purchase and subsequent syndication, Hot And Treacherous has gone on to become an Age Group star.

During a stellar three-year-old season, the pacer ran fourth in the Group One Northern Derby behind fellow NZB Standardbred standout Krug (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight), as well as running third behind B D Joe (NZ) (Roll With Joe) in Group One company at the Harness Jewels.

After a brief spell, Hot And Treacherous has taken little time to make the step from Age Group racing to the open class scene.

The three-year-old ran second behind New Zealand Cup winner Copy That (NZ) (American Ideal) to a very narrow margin in a big first up, before producing his excellent Summer Cup win on Friday night.

It is clear Hot And Treacherous has all the attributes needed to be an open class force – speed, stamina and great manners.

“He is getting better all the time and is a very good standing start horse, which will help later in his Open Class career,” Gareth Hughes said.

NZB Standardbred graduate B D Joe ran a strong race behind Hot N Treacherous on Friday night, finishing third for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer and driver Ben Butcher.

The three-year-old reeled off blistering closing sectionals when charging home from the rear.

Prospective buyers have the chance to secure a half-brother to Hot And Treacherous at NZB Standardbred’s 2022 National Yearling Sale in Auckland on 13 February.

Breckon Farms will offer Lot 87, an Art Major colt out of Hothooves (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight).
