In just her second start Forever Dream (NZ) (Downbytheseaside) showed all the qualities needed for feature racing to take out the $36,000 Group Three Cobbity Equine Farm Leonard Memorial Stakes (1980m) at Addington on Sunday.

The NZB Standardbred graduate worked in the middle and early stages of the fillies feature before sprinting best to win for trainers Cran and Chrissie Dalgety and driver Carter Dalgety.

Forever Dream was purchased for $22,000 by Regan Todd at the 2022 National Weanling Sale at Karaka when she was offered among the Woodlands Stud draft.

The two-year-old led early in Sunday’s feature before being challenged at the bell and then settling into the trail.

As the Leonard Memorial Stakes turned into a staying test, it was the Cran and Chrissie Dalgety trained filly’s stamina that shone through.

“She really raced like a true racehorse today and it was a very professional display to get the job done,” Cran Dalgety said.

“She has always had a great attitude and a lovely turn of foot and she used both of those today but it was probably her determination and the end of a hard test that won her the race.”
“Seeing that for the first time was quite satisfying and long may it continue.”

The Dalgety camp is hoping to aim Forever Dream at this week’s $70,000 Group Two Entain Two-Year-Old Fillies Stakes (1609m) at Winton.

If she heads south, the pacer will attempt to win her second Group race in just six days.

“We will monitor how she comes through the race and finalise our travel options before we make a definite call,” Dalgety said.

“But she pulled up very well initially and she is a laidback filly who hasn’t been phased by much so far.”

“We are hopeful she will take the big trip down south in her stride and put her best foot forward again.”

The inaugural running of the Entain Two-Year-Old Fillies Stakes will be held on a big day of racing at Winton on Saturday.
