Brilliant Win books Alta Wiseguy (NZ) Ticket to New Zealand Cup

Alta Wiseguy (NZ) wins the Group Three Avon City Ford New Brighton Cup (2600m).

Alta Wiseguy (NZ) (Mach Three) shot towards the top of New Zealand Cup reckoning with his powerful win in the $28,000 Group Three Avon City Ford New Brighton Cup (2600m) at Addington on Friday night.

The NZB Standardbred graduate shrugged off plenty of mid-race pressure in a bold front-running victory, which earned him automatic entry into the Group One New Zealand Cup in November.

Alta Wiseguy was purchased for $30,000 by Stonewall Stables from Alta Dream Lodge’s 2019 Auckland National Yearling Sale draft.

Known as a brilliant beginner, the only concern for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer came when the four-year-old made an uncharacteristic mistake early in the New Brighton Cup.

But Alta Wiseguy was quickly back into stride with driver Tim Williams taking him to the front to set up his highly impressive first-up win.

“He looked like he almost anticipated the start and got himself into a bit of a bad spot, but he regained himself quickly which was good,” Steve Telfer said.

Known for his very high speed and his ability to sprint off another horse’s back, Alta Wiseguy showed strength in his New Brighton Cup when soaking up a mid-race attack for the lead.

Steve Telfer was pleased the horse was able to show a new weapon in his return from a spell.

“The thing we pride him on is his manners, he can step and take a trail,” Telfer said.

“I think it is a progression that he has got stronger and is now able to do what he did tonight.

“He did lead and win the sales race at Kaikoura last year, but that wasn’t in this class.

“Most times he uses his manners and speed to win, but it is definitely good to see him strengthen up a bit.”

Stonewall Stud and the Telfer stable produced the quinella in the New Brighton Cup with NZB Standardbred graduate B D Joe (NZ) (Roll With Joe) running second.

B D Joe was secured for $65,000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch by Stonewall Stud from breeder-vendor Brent Smith.

The four-year-old produced a brilliant effort to storm home from last before the home turn, passing all but one of his rivals.

“We were rapt with him,” Steve Telfer said. “The only thing we have got to work on with him is the start.”

Stonewall Stud enjoyed an incredible night out at Addington on Friday, producing four wins and a quinella with just five runners.

Aardie’s Express (NZ) (Always B Miki), sourced from NZB Standardbred subsidiary Gavelhouse.com Standardbred, was brilliant in her first-up win in a heat of the Nevele R Fillies Series.
