Dual Code Sale Well-received by Market

29 April 2019

New Zealand Bloodstock forged a new path today, hosting its first dual code auction of thoroughbred and standardbred horses. Following 61 thoroughbred lots that went under the hammer this morning, a further 71 standardbred lots were offered today as part of NZB’s 2019 All Aged Sale in Christchurch.

Trading reached a turnover of $248,350 for 48 horses sold, with a clearance rate of 71%. The average reached $5,174 while the median was $3,500.

“The Sale has been well supported with a large number of buyers here looking to acquire stock from notable consignors,” commented NZB’s Director James Jennings.

“We’re satisfied with the results for our second-ever standardbred Sale and continue to be pleased by the markets response to our foray into standardbred auctions.

“Today’s results were encouraging and we look forward to the second session of the All Aged Sale at Karaka in a week’s time.”

Shortly after the broodmare session finished, with six lots sold for an aggregate of $34,800, the highest price of the day was realised when Peace Bloodstock outlaid $50,000 for the second yearling to enter the sale ring, Lot 19.

A filly by prominent sire Bettor’s Delight, the daughter of Group One NZ Oaks and NSW Oaks winner Fight for Glory was offered on account of Diamond Head Lodge, bolstering their position as the leading vendor by aggregate with just the one lot.

Studholme Bloodstock followed closely behind as a top vendor by aggregate with nine lots sold for $46,300 in receipts and came out on top by average with three or more sold at $5,144 on average. Their highest-priced lot consigned was a yearling colt by A Rocknroll Dance (Lot 42) who fetched $14,000 from Southland buyer Peter Kett.

They also sold the top priced weanling with their Lucky Chucky colt at Lot 57 who went to the $4,000 bid of Stephen Witte.

Among the three lots that Bradley Mowbray secured was Beaudiene Breeding’s Lot 22, a yearling colt by Bettor’s Delight, who fetched $12,000 and took his total spend to $14,000. This bolstered the figures for Beaudiene Breeding who were the second leading vendor by average with four lots sold for an average of $4,438.

The progeny of Bettor’s Delight were in strong demand as he topped the sires by average list (three or more sold) with six lots sold for an average price of $12,867. Sportswriter sold three lots at an average of $5,100 while A Rocknroll Dance sold six lots for an average of $4,583.

All unbroken weanlings and yearlings purchased at the 2019 All Aged Sale are eligible for the Harness Million Series with approximately $1 million in prizemoney for graduates.
