B D Joe Scorches to Another Stakes Race Success

5 December 2022

B D Joe (NZ) secures his fourth stakes victory.

B D Joe (NZ) (Roll With Joe) showed he is right on track for his next Group One tilt with his scintillating win in the $28,000 Group Three East West Fencing Summer Cup Free-For-All (1980m) at Addington on Sunday.

The NZB Standardbred graduate charged home to beat a quality field, ending the Harness Racing New Zealand 2022 Grand Prix meeting on a high for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer.

B D Joe was secured for $65,000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch by Stonewall Stud and was offered in Laura Smith’s draft.

The pacer was desperately unlucky when unable to find clear running in his last start in the Group One New Zealand Free-For-All at Addington.

That was not an issue on Sunday as B D Joe charged down the middle of the Addington track to score a brilliant win for driver Tim Williams.

The four-year-old showed he is right on track for this month’s Group One Invercargill Cup at Ascot Park, downing several key rivals in the process.

“We are really pleased, he had a great Cup Week but he didn’t get a lot of luck,” Steve Telfer said.

“He freshened up and had a few days off and he has come back really strong. It was a quality drive from Tim and the times he ran were really quite good.
“We are really thrilled with him and he looks really ready now for the Invercargill Cup.”

Williams settled B D Joe off the speed, electing not to get too involved in a hectic early battle for the lead.

That decision proved to be the winning move of the race, with B D Joe easily overhauling the leaders and reeling off stunning closing sectional times to win. B D Joe stopped the clock in a race record time of 2-18.5 for 1980m. The pacer’s Group Three victory was his fourth at stakes level.

B D Joe will attempt to add a second Group One title to his resume when he heads to Invercargill on December 17.
