Alta Wiseguy (NZ) Caps Incredible Year for Stonewall Stud

Alta Wiseguy (NZ) wins the Group Two Lincoln Farms Franklin Cup (2700m).

Alta Wiseguy (NZ) (Mach Three) bookended a stellar season for trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer with a victory in the $42,000 Group Two Lincoln Farms Franklin Cup (2700m) at Alexandra Park on New Year’s Eve. 

After being held up on the home turn, the NZB Standardbred graduate charged late to down New Zealand Cup champion Copy That (NZ) (American Ideal) in a thrilling finish to New Zealand’s last race of the year.

Alta Wiseguy was purchased for $30,000 by Stonewall Stud from Alta Dream Lodge’s 2019 Auckland National Yearling Sale draft.

Stonewall Stud and the Telfers produced 98 wins together in 2022 to win the New Zealand trainers premiership. They got on the board on with four wins on January 2 which included Alta Wiseguy’s victory in the $27,000 Group Three Central Otago Cup (2000m). And it ended with the brilliant’s pacer’s victory in the Group Two Franklin Cup.

“To win (the premiership), to get so close to 100 for the season and for all of us to get that reward really means something,” Steve Telfer said.

“And to get that win as the last one (of the year), is very, very special.”

Winning stakes races with NZB Standardbred graduates was a feature of an outstanding premiership-winning year for the Telfer stable.

Alta Wiseguy also triumphed in the Group Three Invercargill Cup (2700m) and the Group Three New Brighton Cup (2600m).

Open class star B D Joe (NZ) (Roll With Joe) contributed three black-type wins with victories in the Group Two Canterbury Classic (2600m), the Group Two Ashburton Flying Stakes (2400m) and the Summer Cup Free-For-All (1980m).

The Telfer stable also produced Aardie’s Express (NZ) (Always B Miki), a graduate of NZB Standardbred subsidiary standardbred.gavelhouse.com, to win both the Group Two Southland Oaks and the Sires Stakes Harness 7000 (1980m).

Stonewall Stud clinched Group One success toward the end of their monumental year when Allamericanlover (NZ) (American Ideal) took out the Group One Queen Of Hearts (2200m) at Alexandra Park.

Steve and Amanda Telfer have joined forces with Hayden Cullen and ahead of the 2023 season with more outstanding results expected from the Stonewall Stud trainers.
