Despite only just commencing their race careers as two-year-olds, NZB Standardbred weanling graduates have already made their mark during New Zealand blacktype racing this season.

Buyers have the opportunity to secure that same calibre of youngsters next week during the first-ever dedicated National Weanling Sale held at Karaka on Monday 3 May.

Of the eight Group and Listed events for two-year-olds run in New Zealand this season to date, NZB graduates have made up 19 of the possible 27 top-three placings across both gaits.

Heading these is, My Ultimate Chevron (NZ) (Sweet Lou) who booked his ticket into the $150,000 Group One Garrards Sires Stakes Series Final (1980m) when producing a flying late finish to win the third heat of the series on 22 April at Addington.

Purchased as a weanling by the Lake Brunner syndicate for the value price of $13,000 from Woodlands Stud’s draft at the 2019 All Aged Sale, the colt was then purchased by his current owners, Tumby Park, for $27,500 at the 2020 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch.

My Ultimate Chevron showed his class as soon as he hit the racetrack, taking out the $23,000 Group Three New Zealand Sapling Stakes (1609m) on debut at Ashburton in February.

Following in his footsteps, several other weanling graduates to have gone through an NZB Sale continue to showcase their value as racetrack propositions.

Finishing a close up third behind My Ultimate Chevron was Bollinger (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight), who charged down the outside in the final stages of the race.

That effort came in the Hayden Cullen trained two-year-old’s third start, following his fourth placing in the $46,000 Group Two Avon City Ford New Zealand Welcome Stakes (1980m) and a second in the Group Three $22,000 Macca Lodge Kindergarten Stakes (1609m).

Passed in as a weanling at the 2019 All Age Sale, Bollinger was later offered as a yearling by Georgia Brooke Lodge at the 2020 Auckland National Yearling Sale. He was purchased by prolific owner Jean Feiss for $200,000.

Montana Glory (NZ) (Always B Miki) also put on a brave performance at Alexandra Park last Friday, after charging home to run second to fellow graduate True Fantasy (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) in the $90,000 Group One Woodlands Stud Caduceus Club Fillies Classic (2200m).

Montana Glory was a $24,000 purchase secured by Montana Park out of Alabar’s draft at the 2019 All Aged Sale.

Earlier this season, Chevrons Bypass (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) ran third in the $58,000 Group Two Crombie Lockwood Bloodstock Delightful Lady Classic (1700m) at Alexandra Park.

The filly was purchased as a weanling for $22,000 by Kentuckiana Lodge out of Michelle Carson’s draft at the 2019 All Aged Sale in Auckland.

Woodlea Beaver (NZ) (Sweet Lou) ran a close second in the $22,000 Caduceus Club of Southland/Alabar Southland Fillies Classic (2200m) at Ascot Park.

The filly was purchased by Woodlea Standardbreds for just $6,000 out of the Woodlands Stud draft at the 2019 Auckland All Aged Sale.

Buyers can purchase with confidence at this year’s National Weanling Sale, with the prospect of investing at a moderately low cost in comparison to the returns weanling graduates make on the racetracks.
