Solid Pacing Session on Day Two in Christchurch
21 February 2023
Active buyer participation lit up the sale ring on Day Two in Christchurch, with a solid day of trading igniting the pacing session of NZB Standardbred’s 2023 National Yearling Sale.
At the close of selling 71 lots sold for an aggregate of $3,643,000. The average and median closed at $51,310 and $36,000 respectively, and the clearance rate settled at 74%.
NZB Standardbred Manager Cam Bray was pleased with the results at the conclusion of selling.
“We are heartened by the results today, which saw momentum from the Auckland session flow into the first day of the Christchurch Sale of Pacers.”
“The key sale indicators are comparable to the 2022 statistics and we saw plenty of buyers active in the sale ring.
“We’re looking forward to the final session and we are expecting the activity to flow through to tomorrow,” Bray said.
The highlight purchase of the day came after Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan Racing Stables secured Lot 277 for a $240,000 price tag. The Bettor’s Delight colt out of Hartofdixie (NZ) was prepared and sold by Price Bloodstock.
Champion trainer Barry Purdon commented on the purchase.
“I trained the mother and this one looked like a dead-set Bettor’s Delight.”
“He was a good type who looks like he will run early,” Purdon said.
The second highest-priced yearling on Day Two was purchased by agent Peter Lagan from Shard Farm’s draft, a full sibling to prolific Group One winner Amazing Dream (NZ).
Lagan purchased Lot 240 for $190,000, a filly by Bettor’s Delight out of Christian Dreamer (NZ) on behalf of West Australian buyer Jim Giumelli.
“This filly definitely has residual value.”
“She is beautifully bred and has an outstanding pedigree page.
“If she wants to be a good horse, she will be a good horse,” Lagan said.
Trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan also purchased Lot 200 for $160,000 on behalf of Dean Shannon’s Queensland-based Montana Park banner. The Art Major colt out of Agree With Me (NZ) was offered by Spreydon Lodge.
Vendor John Stiven of Arden Lodge was thrilled with the sale of Lot 212, a Captaintreacherous colt out of Arden’s Choice (NZ). The yearling was purchased by Stonewall Stud for $140,000.
The stunning colt was also awarded the International Animal Health Products Best Presented Award of the Christchurch session.
John Stiven of Arden Lodge was thrilled with the Sale of the colt.
“We have been coming here a long time.”
“He was the second foal out of the mare and her first colt.
“We have been hoping that we could bring him to the Sale since he was foaled to accomplish what he did today and we couldn’t be happier that it happened,” Stiven said.
The leading purchaser by aggregate during the first pacing session was Stonewall Stud. The successful stable continued their dominance in the sale ring, securing 11 yearlings for a total spend of $803,500 on Day Two.
The final session of the 2023 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch continues on Wednesday 22 February, with Lot 301 to 406 selling from 1PM (NZT).
Coverage will be streamed live at nzbstandardbred.co.nz, NZB Standardbred’s Facebook page and on Freeview Channel 200 in New Zealand.
