Record-breaking Start for NZB Standardbred
18 February 2019
New Zealand Bloodstock made a successful first venture into the Standardbred auction market when it held its first National Yearling Sale under now established division, NZB Standardbred.
Vendors were delighted with the results at the Auckland Sale, with thirteen yearlings making in excess of $100,000 and the Sale average and median both increasing substantially on last year’s result.
At the close of trading, 100 Lots were sold for an aggregate of $4,675,000 with 30 less horses catalogued than in 2018. The clearance rate was a healthy 73%, with the average and median both reaching an all-time high of $46,750 (up 38% on 2018) and $34,000 (up 46% on 2018) respectively.
“I’m very pleased for our first foray into the Standardbred Sales,” commented NZB Managing Director Andrew Seabrook.
“At the end of the first day of selling, feedback from buyers has been positive and it shows in the results.
“The atmosphere has been very encouraging and the clearance will climb over the coming days.”
The fireworks came early in the piece today when Breckon Farms’ Lot 18 entered the ring. A son of Art Major and half-brother to multiple Group One winner Elle Mac, Billion Dollar Boy was knocked down to the $190,000 bid of local trainer Graeme Rogerson.
“We liked his pedigree right from day one,” said Rogerson’s foreman Dylan Ferguson.
“His type matched his pedigree and we certainly thought he was the top colt in the Sale.”
The leading buyer at the end of selling, Rogerson secured five lots for $406,000 in receipts.
Breckon Farms also sold the highest-priced trotter at the Auckland Sale in Doosie Do at Lot 53. A son of Muscle Hill, the colt made $110,000 going to the bid of Australian-based Jim Connelly purchasing under his KPC Racing banner.
Muscle Hill was the leading trotting sire by average (three or more sold) with four lots sold at an average of $90,000, while Captaintreacherous topped the leading pacing sire table with three lots sold for an average of $81,667.
Local vendor Woodlands Stud are the leading vendor by aggregate having sold 30 lots for a total of $1,401,500, including four of the top 10 yearlings sold today.
“It was good to see the Australians here, NZB did a great job in getting buyers on the complex,” commented Woodlands Stud’s principal Andrew Grierson.
“There was a lot of buzz leading into today and it’s the way it went for us, we had a good Sale overall and are happy with the results.”
The leading vendor by average (three or more sold) was Hollis and Robertson Equine Services who sold 11 lots at an average of $66,864, also consigning four of the top 10 highest-priced yearlings today.
The Christchurch Sale commences tomorrow with Lot 146 to Lot 195 going under the hammer from 4.00pm.
All horses purchased at the National Yearling Sale are eligible for the NZB Standardbred Harness Million Series with approximately $1 million in prizemoney for graduates.
