Outamyway (NZ) Clinches Thrilling Harness Million Series Victory

24 May 2021

Outamyway secures a narrow victory in the $75,000 Listed Harness Million Three-Year-Old Trot (1980m)

Outamyway (NZ) (Love You) became the first horse to win back-to-back NZB Standardbred Harness Million Race Series titles with an exhilarating victory in the $75,000 Listed Harness Million Three-Year-Old Trot (1980m) at Addington on Friday night.

The Paul Nairn trained gelding prevailed in the most exciting of finishes after digging deep to hold out the late bid of runner-up Regal Attire (NZ) (Muscle Hill) by the barest of margins.

The brilliant win added a second Harness Million title to Outamyway’s resume, bringing huge success for his large group of owners following his breakout win in last year’s $75,000 Listed NZB Standardbred Harness Million Two-Year-Old Trot (1980m) on the same track.

Outmyway was offered by White Stables for $17,500 at NZB Standardbred's 2019 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch.

Trainer Paul Nairn syndicated the three-year-old, convincing some of his family to come into Outamyway’s ownership group.

“I liked him when I saw him at the sales and even more when I started breaking him in,” the trainer said.

“I didn’t think I would have any trouble finding owners for him, but I was up against it a bit because my mum and my wife took a share in him.”

Driver Blair Orange had Outamyway in front soon after the start of Friday night’s feature.

When challenged on the home turn, the three-year-old dug deep to hold off his rivals in a thrilling finish.

“After he galloped last week I was hopeful he could do things right,” Nairn said.

“I was pleased with him, he can be pretty relaxed but Blair said he fought hard to win in.”

Nairn will now set Outamyway for a Group One tilt at next month’s Harness Jewels.

Regal Attire secured his first black-type placing with his outstanding effort for second in Friday night’s feature.

After following the winner throughout, the Hayden Cullen trained gelding rallied hard on the passing lane, going down by the just a nose at the line.

Regal Attire was offered by Breckon Farms for $65,000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale in Auckland.

Leaf Stride (NZ) (Love You) ran on strongly to take third in the Harness Million Final after having to settle last shortly after the start.

Owners Emilio and Mary Rosati purchased Leaf Stride for $90,000 from Michelle Caig’s draft at the 2019 National Yearling Sale at Christchurch.
