New Zealand a Breeding Ground for Success

As catalogues for the second edition of NZB Standardbred’s National Standardbred Yearling Sales arrive in letterboxes around the globe, a timely reminder about the immense success of the breed on both sides of the Tasman is in order.

During the 2018-19 season kiwi standardbreds showed immense courage and ability, demolishing competition on both sides of the ditch. With rivalry only matched on rugby fields, netball courts and cricket pitches - the trans-Tasman breds having battled for supremacy with the New Zealand breed shining bright.

51% – More than half of all eligible stakes races in Australia and New Zealand last season were claimed by horses bred in New Zealand.

64 – Individual Group One races in Australasia last season were won by kiwi horses, NZ was the leading source of Group One winners with a 54% strike rate.

41% – Of all stakes race in Australia last season (both gaits) were won by New Zealand Standardbreds.

37% – Kiwi horses claimed 37% of all eligible Group One races in Australia during the 2018 – 19 season.

#1 – Last season, New Zealand was the leading source of eligible Group One winners in Western Australia, claiming a massive 68% (both gaits), 50% in Queensland, and 35% in Victoria.

41% – Of Group One trotting features were triumphantly claimed by NZ horses last season.

95% – Over the course of the 2018 – 19 season NZ horses defended 95% of all takes races on home soil.

75% – 18 of the last 24 Group One Australasian Breeders Crown 3YO Trot races have been won by New Zealand Standardbreds.

36% – Kiwi-bred pacers won a massive 36% of all eligible Group One races in Australia last season.

41% – A phenomenal 41% of all eligible Australian pacing races were won by New Zealand horses during the 2018 – 19 season.

5/7 – 5 of the last 7 $1m Group One Miracle Miles have been won by kiwi Standardbreds, including 2019 winner Spankem.
