Hiranya Starts Derby Wave for NZB Standardbred

NZB Standardbred graduate Hiranya (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) has started what could be an epic year of Derby wins for breeder-vendors Paul and Pauline Renwick.

Hiranya kept his unbeaten record in Australia intact when justifying his red-hot $1.75 favouritism by winning the A$40,000 Group Three Tasmanian Derby (2597m) at Hobart last month.

The pacer was purchased from the Renwicks for $40,000 by Mark Jones at the 2020 Christchurch National Yearling Sale, when offered by Broadfield Lodge.

Jones syndicated Hiranya among a large group of owners who enjoyed good success with him before he was sold to prominent Australian owner Michael Boots.

The Bettor’s Delight gelding won his first start in Australia for the Craig Turnbull stable before taking out the Tasmanian Derby to give Turnbull’s daughter Abbey the biggest win of her career in the sulky.

Hiranya will now be freshened with a big year of three-year-old features in mind.

“He will go out for a bit of a rest now, but Dad does have a few nice races in sight for him,” Abbey Turnbull said.

The Renwicks did not have to wait long to win their second Derby of 2022.

The Canterbury couple bred and sold star New Zealand three-year-old Akuta who ran to his first derby victory at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

Akuta (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) won the third Group One event of his stellar career when charging home to win the $228,000 Group One Woodlands Stud Northern Derby (2700m) for trainers Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen.

Between Akuta and Hiranya and more of their NZB Standardbred graduates, the Renwicks look certain to enjoy more Derby success in 2022.

The couple sold 12 yearlings at the recent 2022 Christchurch National Yearling Sale through their PI & PM Renwick Farm including the full brother to Akuta.
