B D Joe (NZ) Begins New Zealand Cup Campaign on Perfect Note

11 September 2023

B D Joe (NZ) (Roll With Joe) booked his ticket into New Zealand’s greatest race with his powerful victory in the $42,000 Group Three Avon City Ford New Brighton Cup (2600m) at Addington on Friday night.

The NZB Standardbred graduate was the star performer of last year’s Group One New Zealand Cup (3200m) and he started his 2023 campaign exactly where he left off last year.

B D Joe was secured for $65,000 by Stonewall Stud at the 2019 National Yearling Sale in Christchurch when he was offered by breeder-vendor Brent Smith.

The five-year-old secured automatic entry into the New Zealand Cup with his outstanding fresh up victory for driver Tim Williams.

Though B D Joe was unlikely to need his qualifying ticket, his trainers Steve and Amanda Telfer now have the luxury of knowing B D Joe’s place in the country’s most anticipated race is now secure.

“It was about the perfect return to racing,” Steve Telfer said.

“He stood up and stepped away, which was great and that enabled him to race handy.”
“And then he didn’t have to work hard because Tim moved at the exactly the right to get the lead and he won pretty easily without having to be knocked around.”

“So really we couldn’t have asked for more and it should bring him on but not knock him at all.”

B D Joe made a great beginning to slot into the one-one early in Friday night’s feature.

Driver Tim Williams took no chances with the favourite, taking him to the lead with a lap to go.

From there, their rivals never got a look in with B D Joe clearing out from a strong field to win untested.

Several NZB graduates ran excellent races in Friday night’s New Zealand Cup qualifier.

Anything Goes (NZ) (American Ideal) fought on strongly for third after making a mid-race move.

Got You Covered (NZ) (Art Major) ran on late to take fourth, ahead of Allamericanlover (NZ) (American Ideal) who ran a meritorious fifth.

NZB Standardbred graduates filled seven of the first eight placings in the New Brighton Cup with Bach (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight), The Falcon (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) and Republican Party (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) next across the line.

An NZB Standardbred graduate ran to the biggest victory of the night in another of Friday’s Addington features.

Toyko Rose (NZ) (Captaintreacherous) won heat two of the Nevele R Fillies Series by a massive nine and a half lengths for trainer Mark Jones and driver Samantha Ottley.

The three-year-old headed an NZB Standardbred trifecta with What A Minx (NZ) (Art Major) second and Black Pearl (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) third.
