2021 National Standardbred Yearling Sale Catalogue Online Now

NZB Standardbred’s third annual National Standardbred Yearling Sale catalogue can now be viewed online, with printed copies due to arrive in letterboxes in early December.
Showcasing some of New Zealand’s brightest talent, this week has kicked off the countdown to the Australasian standardbred industry’s highlight sale event.

- Day 1: Saturday 13 February, 1PM (NZT), Parade of Trotters & Pacers
- Day 2: Sunday 14 February, 12PM (NZT), Sale of Trotters & Pacers, Lots 1 - 134
2021 Christchurch Sale Dates at Canterbury Agricultural Park
- Day 1: Monday 15 February, 1PM (NZT), Parade & Sale of Trotters, Lots 135 – 183. Selling commences 3PM (NZT)
- Day 2: Tuesday 16 February, 10AM (NZT), Parade & Sale of Pacers, Lots 184 – 305. Selling commences 1PM (NZT)
- Day 3: Wednesday 17 February, 10AM (NZT), Parade & Sale of Pacers, Lots 306 – 430. Selling commences 1PM (NZT)
NZB Director and Operations Manager James Jennings is aware of the evolving landscape of standardbred auctions and is cautiously optimistic heading into the Sale next February.
“NZB has been at the forefront by developing new technology for our auctions.”
“This edition’s extended format was brought about to cater for our international clients, encouraging them to participate by selling at a reasonable hour.
“It has also given us the opportunity to stable more horses in our Christchurch pacing session, aiding every vendor with the opportunity to market and parade their horses,” Jennings said.
Buyers will have the opportunity to secure elite yearlings from prominent black-type families, with the strength of the catalogue underpinned by champion sires and high performing dams. There are 39 siblings to Group One winners highlighted by:
- Lot 11 is a full-brother to Hard Copy (NZ) (American Ideal), a dual Group One winner in Western Australia. The American Ideal colt is out of Readallaboutit (NZ) (Presidential Ball), the dam of five winners.
- Lot 39 is a A Rocknroll Dance colt out of Group One-winning dam Twist and Twirl (NZ) (Artsplace). He is a half-brother to prolific Group One winner King Of Swing (NZ) (Rocknroll Hanover) who has claimed the 2020 $1,000,000 NSW Miracle Mile (1609m) and 2020 $500,000 National Hunter Cup (2760m).
- Lot 44 is a half-brother to current Group One winner in New Zealand and fellow NZB Standardbred graduate It’s All About Faith (NZ) (Captaintreacherous). The colt by promising sire Always B Miki is out of Christian Cullen mare Veste (NZ).
- Lot 142 is a Muscle Mass colt out of Successor (NZ) (Sundon). He is a full brother to Group One Livamol NZ Trotting Free-For-All (1980m) winner Heavyweight Hero (NZ).
- Lot 217 is a Bettor’s Delight colt out of eight time-winning mare Safedra (NZ) (Mach Three). He is a full-brother to 2020 Victoria Oaks winner Dr Susan (NZ).
- Lot 315 is a full-brother to four time Group One winner in Chicago Bull (NZ) and current Group One winner Perfect Stride (NZ). The Bettor’s Delight colt is out of Chicago Blues (NZ) (Christian Cullen).
- Lot 322 is an Art Major filly out of Chrushem (NZ), who is a half-sister to NZB Standardbred Horse of the Year Spankem (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight).
The catalogue is bountiful with proven, emerging and first season sires representing both gaits including Champion sire Bettor’s Delight, Art Major, Captaintreacherous, Majestic Son and Muscle Hill.
Also included is a quality selection of progeny by freshmen Downbytheseaside, Vincent and What the Hill. The three stallions were introduced into the market at NZB Standardbred’s 2020 All Age Sale, proving popular amongst buyers.
NZB Standardbred’s Cam Bray is enthused by the high calibre of yearlings this year.
“The quality of this year’s catalogue is impressive, with some great types by both our first season and more established sires.”
“The kind winter in most parts of New Zealand has seen this season’s yearlings to be more forward in comparison to other years, which will stand them in good stead.
“This should give breeders and purchasers alike a lot of confidence heading into the Sale next year,” Bray commented.
Bray is also confident with the level of media New Zealand vendors and consignors are capable of producing.
“Our vendors and consignors have been encouraged to embrace technology, with a large emphasis placed on the quality of lot photos and parade videos produced for this Sale.”
“Our buyers can expect to receive additional documentation and will be pleased with the transparency of information we are aiming to provide,” Bray said.
With 134 yearlings to go under the hammer in Auckland and a further 296 in Christchurch, the action-packed week of inspections, parades and selling is set to appeal to buyers and investors, both locally and internationally.
The Auckland Sale of trotters and pacers held at the Karaka Sales Centre on Sunday 14 February will commence at 12PM (NZT), with all lots paraded in Lot order the day prior, Saturday 13 February at 1PM (NZT).
In Christchurch at Canterbury Agricultural Park, the parade of trotters will take place on Monday 15 February beginning at 1PM (NZT), with the Sale commencing directly after at 3PM (NZT) in a dedicated afternoon trotting session.
The extended format will debut at the parade and sale of pacers, which will be conducted over two days on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 February. Each day the pacing stock will parade by Lot order beginning at 10AM (NZT), with selling at the Christchurch pacing sessions commencing at 1PM (NZT) on both days.
All unbroken yearlings purchased at the 2021 National Standardbred Yearling Sale are eligible for the lucrative $1million NZB Standardbred Harness Million Sale Race Series, with an estimated one million dollars in the prizepool. Earlier this year saw the inaugural running of the Series with Krug, La Rosa (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) and Outamyway (NZ) (Love You) taking the honours. The 2020-21 Harness Million Sale Race Series is set to kick off on Thursday 31 December 2020 at Alexandra Park.
Buyers can purchase confidently with all yearlings available to inspect during on-farm parades. NZB Standardbred and New Zealand based-agents and trainers will be available to inspect on behalf of prior to the Sale and on the grounds at the Karaka Sales Centre and Canterbury Agricultural Park.
International buyers are encouraged to participate via NZB’s new user-friendly online bidding platform, while all New Zealand-based buyers and agents are welcome to attend the physical Sale sessions in person in Auckland and Christchurch.
